Bangladesh remittance incentive: how it works

A government cash incentive can raise the taka a family receives. An advertised exchange rate does not include it automatically, and it does not apply to every international payment.

What the incentive changes

The incentive is extra taka on a remittance that qualifies. It sits beside the exchange rate and the transfer fee. The advertised rate, on its own, is not the amount the family receives.

If the provider’s figure already includes the incentive, adding it again overstates the result. If the figure leaves it out, the family may receive more than that screen shows, and only when that transfer qualifies.

What bKash says now

On its remittance page, checked on 26 September 2026, bKash states that recipients of remittances sent through government-authorized, legal remittance channels receive a 2.5% government incentive. That is bKash’s current operational statement about remittances received on those channels. It is not a rule that every international payment receives 2.5%.

The same bKash pages state that this 2.5% government incentive does not apply to Payoneer transfers. A transfer can arrive in Bangladesh and still fall outside the incentive.

Older Bangladesh Bank evidence

Bangladesh Bank’s quarterly report on remittance inflows for July–September of FY25 is historical policy context, not bKash’s current product page. It says the government first announced a 2 percent cash incentive on inward foreign remittance through the banking channel, effective 1 July 2019, and raised it to 2.5 percent from 1 January 2022. The same passage says eligible United Nations peacekeeping earnings sent through the banking channel were covered at 2.5 percent from that date.

That report describes the period it covers. It also describes banks checking documents before the incentive is released. It does not, by itself, decide a transfer you make today.

A budget speech, reported as news

On 11 June 2026, BSS reported that the finance minister, while presenting the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2026–27, said the existing 2.5 percent cash incentive on remittances sent through legal channels would continue. That is a news report of a government-policy statement. It is not a Bangladesh Bank circular, and it is separate from what bKash currently tells customers on its remittance page.

The channel has to qualify

Read the three sources as three different things: bKash’s current statement about legal-channel remittances, Bangladesh Bank’s older quarterly account of the banking-channel incentive, and a news report of a budget speech. A cash pickup, a mobile wallet, and a bank deposit are not automatically the same case. The provider’s own quote is where you see whether this transfer is inside the 2.5% or outside it.
